Sørvágur is one the three main towns in Vágar island. The airport and the Airport Hotel are situated in Sørvágur. A small village, called Vatnsoyrar, is near Sørvágur. Two popular destinations west of Sørvágur are the small villages Bøur and Gásadalur. Vágar island is connected with Streymoy, the largest island, by a subsea roadtunnel. The population of Sørvágur is around 1000. Since the subsea tunnel between Vágar and Streymoy was made in 2002, the population of the villages/towns in Vágar island has increased. Mykines is a very popular island, where tourists enjoy to watch the puffins on Mykinesholmur. Public and private ferries/boats sail to Mykines from Sørvágur daily in summertime.
