Among all the villages in the Faroes that deserve epithets like 'magnificent' or 'picturesque' Saksun is the one which, more than any other, can claim a wondrous serenity.
On the road you pass a lake, which seems picturesque enough but then over a final rise you see the small settlement below you, the church on the other side of the road and far below a lagoon created by the sea, with only a short chanel between high hills separating it from the open Atlantic.
