Christiania

Christiania is a 'free state' inside Copenhagen.  Originally a military base, hippy squaters moved into the area when the militray abandoned it and formed a community based on cooperative ideals.

Part commune, part social experiment, Christiania is home to an array of uniquely designed houses and market stalls selling all maner of good.  The open sale of hash on pusher street, however is probably the communities most famous sight.

Booming land prices are now the biggest threat to the free state.  The government seems convinced to reclaim the site to develop upmarket apartments and has used the sale of soft drugs as an excuse to continually send in the police.  See it while it lasts
