Shopping in Copenhagen
Edit ThisWhether you are looking for a designer piece of clothing or
a hand-crafted Danish-inspired side table, you're bound to find it in Copenhagen. Here are some tips for shopping while visiting this interesting and beautiful destination.
The inner city area of Copenhagen is overflowing with hand-crafters and small boutiques. These small but elegant crafts shops offer high quality items cheaper than if you were to purchase them at a fancier shop. These street shopping areas are vast and full of life.
Strøget
Strøget is a famous street and shopping area known for its
convenient locale to a variety of stores. It is a completely
pedestrian street created in 1962 and offers direct contact with many
fashion shops, sidewalk cafés, and department stores, such as Illum and
Magasin. The allure of Strøget lies in the ability to perform all of
your shopping by foot.
Want a souvenir? Strøget is one of the best
places to find Copenhagen souvenirs for your friends and family. Most
of the small products made by street vendors are well-made and
inexpensive, making great “take-home” gifts for little ones or even
yourself.
The downtown area of Copenhagen is known as Vesterbro and is filled
with shops, boutiques, and more. Each store or café blends in with the
surrounding architecture, offering an array of large and small shops
that add to the bustling, vibrant atmosphere of the city.
There are
a number of larger malls near the downtown area as well as on the
outskirts of the city, closer to the harbor. Fisketorvet Shopping
Centre, a new mall opened in 2000, is located near the harbor of
Copenhagen and is a great place to visit for any generic shopping needs.
Not only does Copenhagen offer unique products from small vendors,
but it is also a place of high fashion. You will find shops of Bang
& Olufsen (stereo equipment creaters), Georg Jensen (silversmith),
and Royal Copenhagen (Danish porcelain maker) in the more fashionable
districts of Copenhagen as well as at Strøget. Some of the biggest
names in fashion reside right on that street, or a connecting side
street.
Beware the crowds in these shops as well as others during
peak tourist seasons. Although the streets are wide and the stores are
large, the massive amount of people packed into Copenhagen during these
times can make you go crazy.
