When to Go in Split
Edit ThisSplit when to go is your guide to the city, offering hints and tips to help you pick the best time of the year to visit.
Climate
Split has a typical coastal Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in the summer and warm and rainy in the winter. The ideal time to visit Split is in late April or early May, although mid-autumn is also a very good time period meteorologically. During the early fall, however, the city may be more crowded with European tourists enjoying the seaside, but the water will be warmer for beach trips.
Some of the loveliest beaches in Europe are found on the coastal islands around Split. BraÄ, the largest and most well-known, is composed of mountains and pebbly beaches. The highest point in the Adriatic, Mount St. Vid, is located on this island. This island, as with the dozens of other popular offshore destinations surrounding Split, is principally reached by ferry, which is most comfortable in the spring through fall seasons. Ferries tend to run more often in the summertime.
Summer Festivals
For those unafraid to brave the crowded summer streets and hot temperatures that can soar into the 95 degree Fahrenheit range, the Split Music Festival attracts the best Croatian composers. It is held towards the end of July. The Split Summer Theater festival is held the week before the music festival, and hosts a variety of artists. Other festivals usually occur in the summer months.
