Staying in the old town is a delightful option in Dubrovnik and there are now a few choices. The Pucic Palace is a five-star wonder on historic Gundulic square and Hotel Stari Grad is a sweet little hotel on a side street.

Many people prefer private rooms but there is a limited selection available in the Old Town. If you arrive by bus or ferry at a reasonable hour, you will probably be met by hordes of old women offering rooms from around 15 dollars per person and up. Although they will insist that their house is really close to the old town, make sure you pinpoint the exact location, to avoid long walks or busrides to the town.

Staying in Lapad peninsula is a reasonable accommodation option. There's a lot of private accommodation and plenty of mid-range hotels and public buses run frequently to the Old Town. Plus, you're close to the beach.

Staying in Babin Kuk is another pleasant option.Babin Kuk is the northern side of the peninsula. It's a little farther out but woodsy and also close to the beach. Buses are less frequent however.

Wherever you stay, it's a good idea to reserve in advance, particularly during the high season of July and August. If you come at the last minute though, head to one of the travel agencies near the ferry dock, the bus station or just outside the main gate. They can usually dig up something. Atlas travel, just before the main gate is a good option. Otherwise,hang around the main gate with a backpack and you probably will be approached by somebody enquiring whether you might need accommodation . .

Staying in the old town will set you back around 20 dollars a person, more if you book through an agent.
