Senior Travel in Sofia
Edit This
The elderly will surely like visiting Sofia, because the city is so suitable for Sofia senior travel. Here are some tips that will help seniors make the most of their visit to Sofia, enjoying an excellent senior holiday.
Where to Stay
Seniors should consider staying in the southern part of the city. It has a notably better infrastructure than the rest of Sofia, plus the southern outskirts consist of luxurious districts, with many lovely little hotels located right at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain. Many nice hotels suitable for seniors are located in the Lozenets district as well.
City Parks
Being in the southern part of Sofia, seniors can have a relaxing walk in one of the few nearby parks. These are the South Park, the Boris’ Garden and the Hunting Park. However, the latter isn’t that safe, because its trails run inside a dense secluded forest, so only larger groups of people should visit it. The South Park and Boris’ Garden are two excellent parks, with lots of trees, beautiful gardens and few lovely ponds, with most notable being the Water-Lily Pond in the Boris’ Garden and the Duck Pond in the South Park.
Vitosha National Park
The Vitosha National Park (commonly referred to as the Vitosha Mountain) is much more beautiful than the regular city parks. Again, to access it, you have to be close to the southern end of the city. The park can be reached via car, bus or taxi. Vitosha offers an extensive network of hiking trails and some stunning nature views. Hiking in the park is an incredible recreational opportunity for all seniors.
Leisure Activities
The city center holds numerous interesting sights and the best thing is that they are located very close to each other. This includes museums, churches and historical monuments. Having a sightseeing walk around the center is a great leisure activity, and you will see many other seniors doing it too.
Health Issues
All seniors should be aware of the fact that Sofia experiences strong heat during the summer (from June to August). The cases of sunstrokes and heart attacks due to the burning sun aren’t a rare thing. The situation becomes even worse with the fact that the local ambulances are really slow and help almost never comes in time. That’s why when it comes to health, it is much safer to visit Sofia in the Spring or in the Autumn.
