Located some 100 km. south of Sofia, Blagoevgrad is home to the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), founded there in 1990 and the Bulgarian South Western University. At AUBG English is the language of instruction and evaluation procedures follow the US academic system. Most of the faculty are American scholars.

Sights in town include the "Varosha" housing complex, which preserves the authentic sight of the houses and the streets from the end of ХVІІІ-th - the beginning of ХІХ-th century and the " Virgin Mary's Inauguration " church, dating back to 1844 - a monument having a national historical importance because of its phenomenal wall-paintings and the iconostasis.

There are also quite a few interesting sights just around the corner and Blagoevgrad is a good starting point for exploring them;

There is a medieval fortress in the village of Drenkovo.

St Katherine's Monastery is only 45 km away from. It is the biggest spiritual and cultural temple in Bulgaria. Established in the Xth century by St. Ivan Rilski. An attraction not be missed.
