Top 5 Must Do's in Sarajevo
Edit ThisSarajevo, the capital city and largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is teeming with cultural and historical sites to interest the tourist. With settlements beginning here in prehistoric times, the city arose in the Ottoman era in the 15th century and has garnered international attention many times in the recent century most notably for its involvement in the long Bosnian War. The city is now adjusting to its role as a major player in the cultural and economic development of the country. When visiting the city, here are the top 5 must do’s to explore:
1: Sarajevo War Tunnels
You can sign up for a tour of the tunnels which takes you through the city with a guide pointing out relevant sites as they are related to the war. Many of the guides on these tours served in the army during the war and offer a compelling first hand perspective of the situation that you would not find elsewhere. The Tunnel of Hope, an 800-meter-long tunnel built under the airport runway, is the last stop. This tunnel was used for safe passage into the free territory and saved countless lives. There is a museum on the spot as well offering more information and history.
2: Old Town
Take a stroll down the cobbled streets of old town and see the mosques and Oriental-style shops that make this area seem like it is in another place entirely. There are numerous Catholic and Orthodox churches, as well as synagogues here, but generally tourists are the most intrigued with the Islamic call to prayers that all happen right in the same area. Visit Morica han, the only remaining Ottoman Inn in the city, while you are in Old Town and check out the engravings by 12th century Persian poet Rubaiyat of Umer Khayam..
3: Bosnian Historical Museum
This is a great museum to explore the history of the city, including that of the Bosnian War. Many of the images and exhibits are not suitable for young children as they depict many gruesome scenes of war, but anyone interested in exploring more about the war will get a lot out of this museum.
4: Spanish/Latin Bridge
Anyone interested in history will enjoy viewing this bridge where Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated in 1914, an event that widely is recognized as what started World War I.
5: Scenic Views
There are many surrounding hills that offer some great views of the city. Be sure to stay on the paved roads and sidewalks, as some landmines still exist in the area, but this is a great way for the adventurous to get a look at suburban Bosnian life. If you don’t want to walk so far, stroll up to the old bastion wall for a great view of the city.
