Medugorje also means "between mountains" which refers to the mountains located in the surrounding area. The town is situated near the Croatian border and the area has a Mediterranean climate. Medugorje is well known as a spiritual town which attracts thousands of international pilgrims every year.

St. James Church

St. James Church is run by the Franciscan Fathers. St. James has confessions every day as well as mass. At St. James Church there is a peaceful atmosphere and Catholics from all over the world gather here to pray.

Mountains

Hiking is a popular activity in Medjugorje. While hiking, tourists can explore the local scenery and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Mt. Krizevac is a nearby mountain which is suitable for climbers of a medium skill level. The climb is not too difficult and the top of the mountain has lovely views over the surrounding area. Cross Mountain is located near Medjugorje. There is a path up the mountain with stations on either side. Once you reach the top you will see a big cross which was positioned here before Wold War II. The climb is not very difficult but there are rocks along the path., so
make sure that you have shoes that are suitable for hiking.

Apparition Hill

It is believed that visions of the Virgin Mary have been seen on Apparition Hill. It is said that the first visions were seen by teenagers who were walking on the hill in June 1981. Beautiful bronze plaques have been erected on the hill and there is a cross where the vision of the Virgin Mary was first seen. This area is visited by international pilgrims. At the bottom of Apparition Hill are stalls selling religious items. It is believed that there have been over 30 million people visiting this site since the visions appeared.

Kravice Waterfall

Kravice Waterfall is a good place to go hiking and guides can be hired. The conditions are suitable for fishing and swimming. There is a restaurant located near the waterfall where refreshments can enjoyed among tranquil surroundings.
