Eating Out in Waterloo

Edit This

Waterloo, Belgium the city made famous by Napoleon's great defeat, is to heaven for any history buff. Travelers will have an enjoyable time with all the city has to offer, including some great eateries.

Ferme du Hameau du Roy

A wonderful place to start for breakfast or brunch is one of the town’s many bakeries or cafes. One in particular, Ferme du Hameau du Roy, is casual and has a lovely patio and cozy fire to sit by and enjoy your meal. Treat yourself to a freshly brewed espresso and a buttery croissant. This café is located at the battlefield so don’t forget some freshly baked bread to nibble on later as you enjoy this historical area.

Famous Waffle Stands

If your morning is hurried, try one of the city’s waffle stands. They have the famous “gaufres” (what Americans call Belgian waffles) but they are so much tastier than the American version. Gaufres are not as thick and fluffy as their U.S. counterparts and have a denser texture and a tangier flavor. These waffles are delicious on their own or the stands offer a variety of fruit and toppings to accompany them. Waffles from these stands are wrapped and should be eaten while on the go.

“Frieries”

When in Waterloo, it is essential to stop at a local “friterie” that serves frites (thin crispy fries), hamburgers, meatballs, chicken and more. Friteries are the Belgian equivalent to American fast food, except better. They are known for their variety of sauces and for a gastronomic delight called a “mitraillette”. The translation means “submachine gun” and it consists of meat, sauce, frites, possibly salad and your choice of sauce atop a freshly baked baguette. That will sustain anyone through a day of sightseeing.

Le Bivouac de L’Empereur

Modern day fare has crept in to this historic town in the form of Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and even Chi Chi’s if you are so inclined. However, Le Bivouac de L’Empereur is a step back to Napoleon’s time. This charming tavern offers fare from the era such as knackwurst, bratwurst, and roast chicken as well as more contemporary items. Enjoy your meal with a Belgian beer or a glass of wine. Be sure to save room for a simple fruit tart or a piece of sinful cake made with Belgian chocolate.
