Liege, Belgium has a variety of cuisines, but the best is the local Belgian Cuisine. There are several types, one being influenced by the Dutch and the other similar to French cooking.

Traditional Dishes

Traditional dishes that are popular in Liege are the Belgian Fries known as French Fries. These treasures known all over the world were first created in Belgium and they are sold here in frietkot or fry shacks with mayonnaise sauce. Another traditional dish is a beef stew cooked in beer that is served all over Liege. Mussels and chips are popular rather than fish and chips in England and potatoes reign supreme in the whole country. In Belgium potatoes are cooked just about any way you can imagine.

Gaufres

Famous Gaufres, or Belgian waffles, are baked using a special waffle iron and are very popular. The Liege waffle is dense and has a burnt sugar coating on the outside. There are street vendors offering this delicacy all over town. Andre is a small shop near Place Saint Lambert that serves Gaufres. The waffles served here might remind one of crème brulee because the sugar caramelizes and crunches when you bite into it. At Andres you can get one for less than $10 and you will never forget it.
