Festivals in Brussels
Edit ThisSablon Baroque Spring Festival
Held in the month of April, the Sablon Baroque Spring Festival is celebrated yearly. This festival attracts those who appreciate fine music to the Sablon area. Musicians from the Royal Conservatories come to the area and perform 17th century baroque music. Chamber music concerts are typically held during the day and highly talented orchestras hold evening performances. Concerts take place at multiple venues throughout the city, including local churches and the Place du Grand Sablon.
Ommegang
Celebrated in the month of July is the annual Ommegang or “walk about.” This extremely colorful and historic recreation of King Charles V’s arrival into Brussels on June 2, 1549 is quite an event. The procession begins in Sablon and ends at the Grand Place. King Charles and all his family members, followers, and other noble guests make up the parade. At the end of the procession, a performance takes place on the stage. And it is here, at Brussels’ Grand Palace, where visitors take in the rest of this elaborate festival.
Fête de la Musique
Each year around June 21, many free concerts bring the vibrant city of Brussels together. This event is named Fête de la Musique and is organized between the cities of Wallonia and Brussels. Typically, over the 3-day festival, over 20 concerts are held for guests to enjoy. All genres of music can be heard, from African to Latin beats to jazz and rock and everything in between, and this is the place to be in order to enjoy all the sounds Fête de la Musique has to offer. This event is so highly entertaining that it has been designed even for kids, Fête de la Musique des Enfants (Kids' Music celebration).
Brussels' Winter Wonderland
The Brussels’ Winter Wonderland kicks off the holiday season and festivities starting at the end of November. It is held on the Place Sainte Catherine for about 6 weeks. The festive sights and sounds fill the air and truly give visitors that holiday spirit. There are many small stalls selling everything from goods to traditional fare and drink, there is surely something for everyone. The Grand Palace is ablaze with lights and is beautifully decorated for the holiday season. There is even an ice skating rink for all to enjoy. Since this is quite a popular festival, consider visiting it during the weekdays when it is typically less crowded.
