Bars and Cafes in Brussels
Edit This
Belgian beers are legendary the world over, and happily there is no shortage of opportunity to sample them at the abundant Brussels bars and cafes. This lively, cosmopolitan city boasts a buzzing cafe culture, and it's possible to find everything from sleek and chic wine bars and bistros to laid back pavement cafes and informal drinking dens.
Best for Beers
To visit Brussels without sampling one of the many delicious Belgian beers would be something akin to sacrilege, and the city boasts no end of establishments offering the opportunity to try as many of the potent brews as you can handle. One good case in point is Cafe Belga, located at the foot of the landmark Art Deco Flagey Building. The fruity Kriek beers are a pleasant companion to a light meal on a warm summer day, or try the appropriately named Kwak - served in a specially shaped glass that emits a quacking sound when you drink from it. Take care if ordering the Delirium Tremens - a super-strong brew that, at around 10 per cent alcohol, will have your head spinning if you attempt to drink more than 1.
Best for Beautiful People
Brussels' eating and drinking scene is growing ever more sophisticated, and the city is home to any number of slick establishments catering to the city's pretty young things. To mingle among them, head to the seriously chic Chatelain neighborhood, where the streets are lined with hip hangouts catering to a well-heeled clientele. One such spot is Quentin, which has a good wine list and a light and tasty selection of elegant finger foods as well as full meals. Take heed, though, you'll need deep pockets if you want to spend some time in this neighborhood, and both male and female travelers should dress to impress if they want to feel at home among the chic elite.
Best for Budget Travelers
Budget travelers are well catered for in Brussels, with plenty of unassuming little neighborhood bars and cafes dotted around the city. These unpretentious spots are great places to enjoy a plate of traditional (and absolutely delicious) oysters and fries, washed down with a local beer. For something a little hipper, try Roskam, at 9 Rue de Flandre. Blink and you'll miss this discreet spot that has nevertheless earned a firm fan base, thanks to its great atmosphere, late opening hours and low prices.
