Ordubad is a region with an ancient history and the specific national and moral values. It is located on the foothills of the Gapydjyg of the Minor Caucasus. Mountains dominate the landscape, its smaller part consists of foothill areas and 5-5 % -of the flat regions. It has extremely rich flora and fauna. The settlement is mostly located on the foothill area and hs the sufficient irrigation and fresh water reserves.

It borders on Iran in the south, Armenia in the north and west and Julfa region in the east and covers an are of 972 km2.

The establishment of the city has not yet been defined exactly. Yet this area is considered one of the most ancient human settlements in the world and the place of the humanity formation. The name of Ordubad is mentioned for the first time in the written sources of the 5th century. The Gemigaya mountain considered one of the great pantheons of the ancient world is also located in Ordubad. The mountain carvings and the settlements locating here enable to trace back the cultural development and the lifestyle of the ancient population settled on the territory of Ordubad in the 7-1st B.C. The settlement and necropolises rich in the remnants of culture of the 2-1st millenniums B.C exist on the territory of such settlements of Ordubad as Sabirkend, Plovdagh and Kharaba Gilan. That proves Ordibad to be 7 thousand years of age.

In the early 18th century Ordubad was part of the Sefevi Empire. In 1724 Ordubad was annexed to the Osmanly Empire and later placed under Nadir shah?s ruling. Thousands of Ordubad residents who became victims of Armenian terrorism were subject to the pursuits in the early 20th century.

The wonderful nature, enigmatic world and natural beauty caused the interest of a number of travelers in the 19-20th centuries. Russian scientist I. Shopen, Polish researcher A. Petzold, French writer A. Duma and others glorified this beauty and left Azerbaijan with great impression of Ordubad.

The land of Ordubad is characterized not only with its colorful beauty but also with famous people, art workers and world-famed scientists. The followers of famous astronomer, scientist, mathematician, poet and state official Nasreddin Tusi Mohamed bin Hasani still live in Ordubad.

Ordubad locating at the junction of the important trade roads maintained trade relations with the Near and Middle East. The region accounted for 40 kinds of grapes. The silk had been exported from Ordubad to Venetia, Marcel, Amsterdam and other towns in Europe beginning from the second half of the 16th century. The Ordubad silk was presented 13 gold medals at the international exhibitions and fairs held in the early 20th century.

To date Ordubad which is considered the live museum of the Eastern world preserves its history and traditions and pass them from generation to generation.

Due to its architectural structure and historical monuments Ordubad was declared the reserve in 1977.

In different periods of time Ordubad like other regions of the country was subject to the armed intervention of foreigners, it had been under occupation of different states yet it did not lose its moral values. Though it was included into a number of regions in accordance with the administrative division the name of the region did not change and replaced by any other names. It was attached the status of a city in the administrative division of the Soviet Union in the 1930s and still preserves this status as well. The land has another peculiar feature. It people are emotional, they strive for every innovation and protect their religious values and pass them to the next generations.

Different expeditions conducted researches in Ordubad, Aylis, Unus, Pazmari, Aza villages, on the territory of Kharabagilan and Gemigaya and other places to study the history and ethnographic peculiarities of the settlement in different period of time. These researchers are still going on nowadays. They prove Ordubad to be a city with rich national values.
