When to Go in Zell am See
Edit ThisZell am See is a picture-perfect resort town bordered by a lake on one side and mountains on the other. This advantageous location means that visitors to Zell am See can enjoy the excellent opportunities for both summer and winter sports.
Snow Season
Much of Zell am See’s popularity is due to its excellent ski and snowboard offerings. Schmittenhöhe is the ski area closest to the town of Zell am See. The ski season on the Schmittenhöhe lifts usually runs from early December through mid-April; of course this schedule changes depending on the snow fall. Kaprun, or Kitzsteinhorn on the glacier has a much higher elevation (10,500 feet/3200 meters compared to 6445 feet/1965 meters for Schmittenhöhe) and as a result a much longer season. It is possible to ski or snowboard at Kaprun year-round. Schmittenhöhe and Kaprun joined together in 1968 to form the Europa Sports Region so you only need one ticket to access both areas.
Water Sports Season
July and August are the warmest months in Zell am See with the high temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) and the low temperatures around around 8 degrees Celsius (47 degrees Fahrenheit). June and September are similarly mild with high temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) and the low temperatures around 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit). You should bare in mind, however, that these temperatures are averages only and that the temperature can often rise higher or drop lower with little notice. As in many mountain resorts, rainy days are common during the summer months.
The water sports season generally runs between late May and late September. You can rent pedal, rowing, or motor boats on the lake between April and October. Between early May and early October, agencies offer boat trips on the lake. During the same period, there are also shuttle boats that run across the lake and that will pick up passengers at the Seecamp Zell am See.
Sightseeing and Festivals
If you are interested in driving the famed Grossglockner Road, know that it is only open between May and November from 5 am to 10 pm. Hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding are best done between late May and early September.
Zell am See boasts two summer lake festivals. The first is in mid-July and focuses on sporting events. The second takes place in early August and features various performances and parades.
