Sights in Zell am See

Edit This

Zell am See is very different from most kinds of ski resorts because, rather than being a modern institution, it can boast its own fascinating history. Set amidst fantastic mountain ranges, there are many things to see both inside and outside the town of Zell am See.

Things to See

Naturally, the most impressive thing in Zell am See is the sight of the approximately 30 mountain peaks, some of them 3,000 meters high, covered in snow. Not too far from Zell am See is the Kaprun glacier and the mountain water reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden.

Schmittenhohe is a mountain with many parklands--reserves included in it. Artists often place works at the ends of trails located on the Schmittenhohe. Other mountains include the impressive Hohe Tauem, which means ‘high passage’, and describes the astonishing range of mountains very well. The mountain ranges that surround Zell am See are definitely part of the resort’s charm.

Mountains attract tourists but so do the lakes. Perhaps 1 of the biggest attractions is Zell Lake with a shore that enjoys a mild climate, and a lake where tourists can enjoy a boat cruise across this lake, viewing the Schmittenhohe from the middle of this beautiful water.

Zell am See sights also include the Church of St Hippolyte which has a number of interesting medieval statues; the Kastner tower, and the folklore museum that is inside the tower.

Other Places to See

About 30 miles west of Zell am See is the Krimml Falls, part of the Hohe national park. This amazing waterfall is around 380 meters tall, and the sight of all that water falling away at the top of the Falls is just breathtaking. Tourists can follow the pathway around the falls in order to keep a safe distance from the edge.

Tourists wanting to avoid another holiday devoted to skiing can try the Zell-am-See-Kaprun golf courses. The golf club which links them makes this the largest golf course in the Alps.

Around 25 km to the west of Zell am See is the city of Mittersill, a historic town that has a range of sights to please the eye. Sights include the castle, the 900 year old Felber Tower and the Hohe National Park Zentrum, a museum dedicated to the history of the Hohe Tauern Park.
