Day Trips in Zell am See
Edit ThisZell am See is a resort located in the Austrian Alps. Even though it has its own ancient history and entertainments, Zell am See is in close proximity to a range of other villages and towns, all with their own history and appeal to the modern tourist. Day trips from Zell am See can take in the whole range of tourist interests, from shopping to natural wonders to amazing architecture and historical places. Wherever the fancy takes the tourist, it is within reach of Zell am See.
Good Places to GoZell am See is close to Salzburg and although most tourists will have travelled to Zell am See from Salzburg, a day trip back is always worthwhile. The city has some amazing sights--the fantastic fortress that dominates the skyline and the cathedral that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salzburg is also famous for being the birthplace of Mozart, and rightly celebrates this connection.
While at Salzburg, it is possible to combine a trip to the Burg Hohenwarfen castle with a trip to the famous ice caves--the largest glacial cave system in the world. These caves are simply phenomenal, so if tourists fancy being dwarfed by nature for a few hours, this is a good place to visit. The combined visits make up a reasonable day-trip on their own.
Another alternative is to visit Saalfelden Leogang. Once there, tourists can take a guided tour of the old mine works and visit the mining museum where there is a practically unique collection of historical mining implements, dating well into the medieval period. Saalfalden is also the jazz capital of the Salzburgian Alps, and there are a number of jazz sessions throughout the year.
Other Places to SeeThe Krimmler Waterfalls: There are many places along the path where the stunning view of this gigantic waterfall can easily be seen. The waterfalls are part of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Salzkammergut: The Imperial House of Austria built a massive town near here called Bad Ischel, and there are also places of seclusion such as the Altausseer See. A visit to these places contrasts the glamour of the imperial family with the splendid peace of Altausseer.
Lake Konigssee: A former hunting lodge, now called St. Bartholomew Church, lies on the banks of the emerald-green lake. A boat trip along this water, loved by Bavarian Kings, is a must for any tourist.
