Top 5 Must Do's in Schladming
Edit ThisDouble-check your Schladming must do’s before taking a trip to this incredible Austrian ski resort. There is a lot to be seen, and you don't want to miss one of the following things:
1. Skiing
Skiing is the primary thing this town is popular with. The surrounding area offers some of the longest uninterrupted ski runs, suitable both for intermediate skiers and beginners. The latter may choose to visit one of the three local ski schools to improve their technique. However, if you’re an experienced skier, you might want to look for something a bit more challenging. Taking a trip to the Dachstein Glacier is a good idea, since it offers some really exciting ski runs.
2. Mountain Biking
At summer, the town is a preferred destination for mountain biking. There is a huge network of suitable trails in the region and all of them are really well marked. Again, you can choose between easier and more challenging rides. All enthusiasts should check the local Dirt Park. Those of you, without any initial plans of biking, can hire a bike later, from one of the local sport shops, where you can also get some repairs done.
3. Sightseeing
Don’t forget that before becoming a modern ski resort, Schladming was a historical settlement formed way back in time - around 1180. It will be a shame leaving the town prior to seeing the Town Hall, the History Museum, the Old Post, the two Churches (Protestant and Catholic) or the ruins of the Town Fortifications. All of these are very close to each other, so it won’t take you much time to see them.
4. Dachstein Glacier trip
The Dachstein Glacier is located near Ramsau, just 30 minutes away with a car from Schladming, and offers 3 short, but very exciting ski runs. But there’s more: an ice palace and a thing called the “Dachstein Sky Walk”. The Dachstein Ice Palace is built inside the glacier and contains a few rooms, filled with different sculptures and decorations. The Sky Walk is an outlook platform, located right next to the Upper Station of the cable car, which reveals an incredible mountain panorama.
5. Shopping
Not that much of a must-do, but more likely a good-thing-to-do, is the idea to check the shopping opportunities in town. There are some excellent clothing and sport shops around, that offer a very wide choice of articles at great prices. Most notable is The Blue Tomato snowboarding shop – definitely a place of interest for every winter sports lover.
