Eating Out in Schladming

Edit This

Any trip to the Austrian region of Styria would be incomplete without a survey of different Schladming restaurants. Austria is known for its excellent food, and although the mining town of Schladming is quite small in population and overall size, its popularity as a tourist destination and a skiing hub makes it a great place to find some very good restaurants. Still, it's always a good idea to research the food in an area before you arrive, and there are a few specialty dishes to Austria and to Schladming in particular that you will regret if you do not sample at least once. Read on for a brief overview of the best dishes to eat in Schladming.

Schnitzel

Schladming's take on the standard schnitzel is a bit different from that in surrounding parts of the country. The traditional schnitzel, developed in Vienna, is a breaded and fried veal cutlet, typically served with a lemon wedge and a side of vegetables or fried potatoes. In Schladming, however, you're likely to find a more elaborate version of the schnitzel. Typically, schnitzels in Schladming are made from either veal or pork, and are breaded and fried in the traditional manner. However, at that point, they vary from the original in that there are often other ingredients added on top of the cutlet. These may include fried eggs, gravies of different types and more. Sampling all of the different schnitzels in Schladming could take up your entire trip.

Strudel

Strudel is another very common Austrian food, and Schladming is no exception to the long list of cities and towns throughout the country that serve excellent renditions of it. Strudel in Schladming is almost always made with apples, although there are certain variations that feature other fruits as well. The fruit is cut up, mixed with sugar, cinnamon and other spices, and placed inside of a pastry dough shell. The pastry is baked and served with powdered sugar on top or ice cream on the side. Strudel in Schladming is the perfect way to finish a meal or to warm up after a day on the ski slopes.
