This fortress atop a hill overlooking Salzburg and the surrounding valley dates to the 11th century (begun in 1077) and was enhanced significantly over the centuries, particularly by the Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, whose efforts were completed under Prince Archbishop Max Gandolf Kuenberg in 1681. The interior features late Gothic secular rooms. It is the largest fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. It has been used as a fortress, barracks for soldiers, and a dungeon. It only ceased being a military outpost in 1861. Because it has been refurbished numerous times it is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, and the view of the surrounding countryside is stunning. Visitors can climb a very steep hill and stairs or take a funicular to the top; the station is located in the Festungsgasse.
