Museums in Graz
Edit ThisVienna’s second largest city has an impressive collection of museums.
Kunsthaus Graz
This is probably the most interesting-looking of all of the museums of Graz. It was built as part of celebrations surrounding Graz’s selection of the European Capital of Culture in 2003. Peter Cook and Colin Fournier designed the museum and named it the “Friendly Alien” because of its “blob” shape and shiny materials. The museum stages exhibitions and installations of art from the 1960s to the present-day.
Alte Galerie
The Alte Galerie is a more traditional art history museum and includes objects from the Romanesque through Baroque periods. It also houses a coin museum and a rotating series of exhibitions.
Landeszeugmuseum
The Landeszeugmuseum has the largest collection of armory in the world, over 32,000 items. Displayed artifacts include helmets, guns, pistols, breastplates, and edged weapons that range in date from 1450 to 1850. Although it is now a museum, when the armory was built in the 17th century it was necessary to protect Styria (the historical region of Graz) against Ottoman forces.
Camera Austria
The Camera Austria is a contemporary photography museum. Its exhibitions change several times a year. Visit www.camera-austria.at for details.
Kindermuseum Frida und Fred
This children’s museum has rotating exhibitions. Although much of the information is only in German, the attractions and exhibitions are appropriate for non-German speakers as well.
Österreichisches Freilichtmuseum Stübing
This “Open-Air” Museum is approximately 30 kilometers from Graz. The extensive grounds house over 100 historically-accurate farm buildings and farmsteads from all over Austria.
