Shirak Mark is in the northwest corner of Armenia. This whole region tends to be flatter and higher in elevation than many parts of Armenia and the winter is long and cold - and it's a great relief from the heat of Yerevan in August. Gyumri, Armenia's second largest city is in Shirak Marz.
With a less hospitable climate, this area is less developed than others, with the exception of Gyumri, which was the largest city in Armenia before it was swalled into the USSR almost a century ago, and this being Armenia, there are a few outstanding monasteries as well of course.
