Garni Temple

This ancient temple was built in the first century by the Armenian king, freshly back from Rome, flush with gold, architects and more.  The temple, indeed in Roman style is built on a promontory in Garni Village, overlooking a massive river gorge, across from the Khosrov Nature reserve.  There are also ruins of Roman baths with tiles, ruins of other foundations such as a castle, and huge blocks which once formed walls.  This is an obligatory stop on the way to must-see Geghard Monastery.

Geghard Monastery

Edit This

This is one of Armenia's must-see attractions, and is located an hour east of Yerevan.  Located at the end of a deep and dramatic canyon, the monastery is partly built against the cliffs, and partly carved out of the mountain.  Some of the chambers and rooms are completely carved into the mountainside, where a small holy spring likely was considered to have healing powers for thousands of years.

There are many khachkars in the complex, often directly carved onto the walls of the mountains and church chambers.  Stairs to the left of the main churches go up more..
