Albania is slowly becoming a tourist destination for those seeking a Mediterranean experience that doesn't cost the same as some of its Western European neighbors. Since the end of the civil war in Yugoslavia, Albania's economy has been slowly growing. As this happens the country is becoming more and more equipped to handle foreign tourists. The Albanian people are proud of their country and will likely point travelers in the direction of several Albanian must do's.

The Fortress of Gjirokastra

Albania has served as a crossroads to many of the world's great empires and armies. One of the noted advantages of this is the many archaeological sites throughout the country. The Fortress of Gjirokastra is known as The Silver Fortress in English. It was built in the 4th century and remains as one of the oldest and well-preserved sites in the country. The fortress on its own is spectacular but visiting it will provide an amazing view of the surrounding countryside.

The Rozafa Castle

The Rozafa Castle is quite well known in Albania. It served as an attack point from which the troops attacked the Romans who were trying to invade. According to legend the wife of the castle builder was sacrificed to the God's to insure the stability and longevity of the castle walls.

The National Museum of Medieval Art

Located in the city of Korca, this museum houses over 7000 pieces of art, sculpture and artifacts. The museum also has an impressive selection of textiles and metal works.

The Ionian Coast

Albania borders the Adriatic sea, leaving hundreds of miles of untouched beaches to enjoy. For those who love to dive, the Cape of Rodon and Cape of Lagji are recommended. Maritime history buffs will appreciate the beach at Dhermi with the remains of wrecked ships moored on its shores. A beautiful array of corals as well as plants are in abundance in this area.

The White Spring

Those that want their health ailments cured may wish to consider a visit to the White Spring. The area cannot be beat for scenic beauty because it is nestled between the Didha and Kunora mountains. The curative properties of the White Spring are spoken about nationwide with locals making pilgrimages to cure ailments of the kidneys, stomach, urinary tract, and thyroid.
