Fier is a prime industrial city of Albania, located in the southwest region of the country in the Fier district. The Fier Travel Guide offers extensive information on the culture, attractions and accomodation options in the city.
Fier was established as a market town by the Vriloni clan of Berat in the late 18 th century. The town is famous for its natural gas, oil and chemical industries and classically beautiful sites. The hot water springs and asphalt rupturing grounds are other reasons to visit this industrious and commercially buzzing town. The history of the natural gas burning escapes dates back to as old as 1 st century AD when there were intense natural fissures in the earth’s crust. The tributory of the Seman River, Gjancia, lines the city and provides the backdrop of picture perfect beauty.
There are several places worth visiting in Fier and the adjoining Byllis and Appolonia region. Appolonia, as the name suggests, is an important Greek settlement in Albania that has a classic flavor and a distinctly ancient appeal. The harbour of this old fashioned town is visited by many travelers for its idyllic settings and native charm. The destination has some of the most archeologically rich bearings and is a prime center for learning Greek culture and the art of rhetoric. The excavations and Monuments of Apoloniaare are a must visit along with the monastery of St. Mary, a modern day museum that exhibits thousands of memorabilia from the rich historical lineage of the region. The Monument of Agonothetes is another magnificent structure that is aesthetically embellished with six pillars in Corinthian fashion. The heritage ruins of the temple of Artemis are also visible from the grand monument. The Library and the Odean, which have live musicals and a mini theater, also attract hordes of visitors with discerning artistic sensibilities. Other interesting places include The house with Mosaics (a brilliant cache of stunning geometrical figures), Fontana and the Museum of Appolonia.
Hotel Fier is a neat property that gives you good value for money and personalized service. Grand Hotel Leone is another good place to stay, but they won’t serve you the best of food. The hotel has a nice Turkish Bath and a sauna room. Another great practical pick is Hotel Shkelzeni.
For a vintage, culture-colored holiday that witnesses a hybrid of industrial spirit and archeological heritage, Fier is a sure-fire winner.
