Day Trips in Albania
Edit ThisDay Trips to Albania
Albania has been virtually closed off to tourists over the last several decades. Visa requirements while under Soviet control made entry difficult. The war in Yugoslavia and Kosovo region made the country quite unsafe and undesirable as well. Albania still has a long way to go but is getting there quickly. One way to get a taste of Albania is to take a day trip. Many of the ferry companies that operate out of Greece and Italy are adding Albanian ports to their lists. One example is Corfu ferries and Cruises. They operate a 1-day cruise between the Greek island of Corfu and the port of Saranda in Albania. The ferry leaves Corfu at 9 a.m. and Saranda at 10:30 a.m. The 1-way fare is 15 euros per person. Passengers will also need to pay a visa fee of 10 euros once they arrive.
Day Trips within Albania
As Albania opens its doors to tourists, small companies are starting to pop up, offering day trips within the country. Day trips from Tirana to some of the country's best attractions are popular. One such trip is to the Black Cave of Pellumbas where participants are treated to majestic mountain views and can experience hiking Albanian style. The Cave is said to be one of the oldest and best preserved pre-historic sites in the area, with tools and artifacts dating back to Bronze and Iron Ages. Dajti Mountain is another excursion that is popular. From Tirana participants are taken to the cable car station that takes them up approximately 1000 meters. From here they follow the trail that winds nicely through the 2 peaks of the Dajti mountain. The lowlands of the country and a spectacular view of the Adriatic coastline are among the treats. Participants continue to the peak of Tujani which lies more than 1500 meter above sea level. It is also the highest point in Albania that can be reached by foot.
