Once populated with indigenous people, this previously Danish island was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second journey to the New World. Bought for only 25 million dollars by the United States in 1917, St Thomas is now a U.S. territory. Filled with beaches, resorts and natural and historical sights, St Thomas is a wonderful vacation spot.

Coral World Marine Park & Underwater Observatory


Coral World Marine Park & Underwater Observatory in St Thomas is a popular tourist destination. It has a spectacular 80,000 gallon circular coral reef tank that is enclosed in glass. You can also see sharks in an open air tank, the turtle pool and a touch pool which is like a marine life petting zoo. For a unique experience bring your swimsuit to walk the Coral World Sea Trek. You'll be fitted with a special breathing helmet and then stroll along the bottom of a giant fish tank. This adventure is reasonably priced and open every day, including Sunday from 9am – 5pm. Charlotte Amalie


Charlotte Amalie is the capital of St. Thomas. This historical town is home to two of St. Thomas oldest buildings Blackbeard's Castle and Fort Christian. The second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere is here, St. Thomas Synagogue. On market days Market Square, a historic slave market, now sells produce.

Magens Bay Beach


Some say Magens Bay Beach in St. Thomas is the world’s most beautiful and tranquil beach. It costs a few bucks to visit, but the turquoise water and splendid views are totally worth the money. A wonderful place to swim and snorkel there is a bunch of amenities including parking, showers, life guards, equipment rentals and restaurants. One of the best things about Magens Bay Beach is that there is afternoon shade provided by palm trees and a nearby mountain. If you are interested, ask locals about the trail to a nude beach from this location.

Frenchtown


Frenchtown in St. Thomas is home to the smallest ethnic group known in the Virgin Islands who are descendants of the French Huguenots. This small fishing village was founded by fishermen who immigrated here from St. Barts. The French Heritage Museum offers some great facts about the area and the people who live here. The colorful houses are an attraction here and so are the delicious restaurants. Frenchtown features scrimptions French restaurants and other European cuisine. Another specialty of this area is of course the fresh caught fish.
