Shopping is a must in St. Maarten. In the capitol of Philipsburg you can find boutiques, department stores, and quaint shops of all kinds that will entice you to buy, buy, and buy more. The best thing about this is that the Port of Philipsburg is duty free so you can ship back your treasures without having to pay a fortune.

2. Simpson Bay Lagoon

Visit the largest lagoon in the Caribbean, Simpson Bay Lagoon. The lagoon has two narrow channels with draw bridges and is otherwise landlocked. This is the place where yachts come to anchor in its sheltered waters and you can see some of the largest and most outrageous yachts there have ever been.

3. Snorkel the Great Bay

If you have never snorkeled before, now is the time to start. The waters around the island are clear to about 100 feet to 200 feet. The Great Bay is a good place to go since there is a wreck of an 1801 English battleship on the bottom. You can find independent dive operators just about anywhere and they will teach you if you don’t know how to dive or snorkel or let you go to it yourself if you do.

4. Dancing and Nightlife

Make sure to indulge in the nightlife of St. Maarten. There are many discos and live music clubs. Try the News Music Café, Greenhouse, Amnesia or Cheri’s Café. If dancing isn’t for you try one of the nine casinos as they provide European style gaming. The largest casino is Casino Royale and it is open until 4:00 am. Prefer a club atmosphere? No problem. Go to the Axum Jazz Café in the capitol of Philipsburg. You may hear jazz to reggae to poetry presentations.

5. Relax at the Beach

Now that you have exhausted yourself doing all kinds of fun things its time to relax on one of the 37 beaches on the island. There are beaches that are calm and placid and ones where you can surf or do other water sports. There are beaches where the main aim is to provide entertainment and wonderful food as well. It isn’t hard to find a beach on the island, there is one right around the corner.
