Curaçao is the largest Caribbean island in the Netherlands Antilles. In 1920 the discovery of oil changed Curaçao. They are now the most industrialized country in the Caribbean. There are three official languages spoke here and one of them is English.  Tourists come from around the world to visit the white sand beaches, swim in warm turquoise colored water and gamble in big name casinos. Because of the rich history in Curaçao there are interesting sights to see on this wonderful island.

Curaçao Underwater Park

On the southeastern coast of Curaçao lies the 20km stretch of coastline that is Curaçao Underwater Park. Established in 1983, the exquisite pristine reef here is home to more than fifty species of coral and over two hundred species of tropical fish. This place is very cool. You can swim with sharks, rays and turtles as well as hand feed them. Try hiring an underwater photographer to document your fun day.

Willemstad

The capital city of Curaçao is Willemstad. This is a great place to see the historical sights of the island. The Curaçao Museum showcases local and foreign artists and also has an antique furniture exhibit. Tickets are cheap and it is open everyday (but not between 12 and 2). Other museums in Willemstad include the Numismatic Museum, the Postal Museum and the Kura Hulanda Museum

While you are there, check out the famous floating market. The vendors are not actually floating on boats, so not exactly sure why it is called the floating market. It is however next to the water. A rainbow mountain of fresh fruits and vegetables are on offer here.

Tafelberg Nature Reserve

The Tafelberg is a picturesque table mountain in Curaçao that is mined for its valuable minerals.  The view of the Tafelberg (3366ft high) is spectacular.  This sight is wonderful tourist sight for bird watchers and hikers.  The down side is that it’s not easy to get to. You will need to take a three or four days for this worthwhile trip.

Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue

Oddly enough there are several Caribbean islands with significant Jewish historical sites. Here in Curaçao they have the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue. This old synagogue was established by Jews who were descendants of the Portuguese. It is the oldest synagogue in the New World. The first part of the synagogue was constructed in 1674, and other parts were added in the early 1700’s. The inside is ornately decorated with hand carved mahogany woodwork and ornate antique chandeliers.
