Things to do

Port Antonio, Jamaica became a tourist hot spot more than 50 years ago, and is a warm, exotic location packed with things to do.

The Blue Lagoon is 20 minutes east of Port Antonio, and was once thought to be bottomless! It has since been determined that the Blue Lagoon is approximately 180 feet deep. This natural lagoon is a mystical blue color which often changes with the angle of the sun. A swim in the Blue Lagoon is extremely unique with its streams of warm water from the Caribbean Sea and its icy fresh water from the underground streams. Originally called the Blue Hole, the name was changed after the filming of the movie The Blue Lagoon, starring Brooke Shields was filmed here. Unfortunately, the Lagoon is closed to the general public, but the boatmen who are stationed by the fence can take you on boat rides around the lagoon.

Shan Shy Beach is 10 minutes west of Port Antonio, and its beautiful white sand beach is a laid back fishing beach where you watch the pace of life come to a screeching halt. The Reggae Boat, stationed here, won the 2006 Port Antonia Blue Marlin Fishing Competition, beating off super yachts from all over the world who came to compete. Many boat excursions are run from this beach which include fishing, snorkeling, and sightseeing sails.

Musgrave Market, located between Port Antonio Square and Main Square, is an off the beaten track attraction. Take in the vibrant colors and smells while perusing through the different vendor stalls. The stalls here sell fresh fruit, vegetables, crafts, clothes, and there are a few little cafes. Musgrave market is safer than most markets in Jamaica, and you will find it at its busiest on Saturday mornings.

Folly Point Lighthouse is located on the tip of the Folly Peninsula about 5 minutes out of town. The lighthouse was built in 1888, and reaches a height of 40 feet. Take a leisure stroll through the lush grounds until you reach the rocky water's edge, and here you can view the fireproof masonry of this cute little lighthouse.

Folly Ruins can also be visited on your trip to the lighthouse, located just past Folly Oval on the Folly Peninsula. There is a myth about the Folly Ruins that says, Folly Mansion was built by a rich American man to impress his wife to move to Jamaica. The shoddy construction of the mansion began to crumble when his wife came to view the property and she cried "what a Folly" and returned back to America, and the Folly Mansion was left to crumble to the ground.
