Ocho Rios, Jamaica has an old world charm that is different from anywhere else on the island. You can find historic buildings, museums and other sites. Of course the beaches are great too. With all the delicious restaurants, interesting shops and refreshing rum cocktails in Ocho Rios it is sometimes difficult to find the motivation to get out and do something. For those who like a little adventure put off your cocktail hour until 3pm and try some of these fun activities.

Dunn’s River Falls

This is a great spot for physically fit travelers. Dunn’s River Falls is best when you scale the trail and climb up to the top. If hiking is not your thing you can use one of the new access roads get you quite close. Stand on terraced decks and watch as the beautiful waterfalls here plunge down into the sea. There is a beach for sunbathing and swimming too. Tourists find the vendors in the gift area to be quite cunning.

Shaw Park Gardens & Waterfalls

A tropical garden oasis awaits you at Shaw Park Gardens & Waterfalls in Ocho Rios. Lush with colorful flowering plants, there are 25 acres to delight nature lovers of all kinds. This park is on a hilltop which provides an amazing view of the azure Caribbean Sea. The entrance fee is very reasonable and comparable to the price of a movie ticket. This is a favorite spot for weddings. Walk around yourself or take a tour with an experienced guide.

Fern Gully

This rainforest tourist attraction is great for the not so physically fit traveler. Fern Gully is actually a short drive-thru rainforest. If you have ever wanted to see the rainforest without doing any hiking, do not miss this. There are over a hundred species of ferns here. While this spot is well-known, it gets mixed reviews. Some people are disappointed and think the vendors are aggressive. If you go with low expectations, you won’t be disappointed.

Green Grotto Caves

This is the perfect destination for anyone looking to spend time with nature and be out of the sun. On the northern coast of Jamaica between Ocho Rios and Monetgo Bay are the Green Grotto Caves. Originally found by the native people who lived here, these caves were used as a hiding place for Spaniards during the English takeover. It is nice and cool underground and the cave formations are wild. Open from 9am – 4pm, the entry fee is $20 and $10 for kids.
