Although known primarily for its luxurious beaches and laid back lifestyle, Kingston boasts quite the cultural scene as well, including a host of important museums.

National Gallery of Jamaica

Widely considered one of the most prestigious museums on the whole island, the National Gallery of Jamaica highlights work by native artists. Housing a wide array of mediums, including sculptures and paintings, the museum boasts over 2,000 pieces. On display you will find works by such revered Jamaican artists as Edna Manley, Mallica "Kapo" Reynolds and Cecil Baugh. Eight permanent exhibits inhabit the space while a whopping 18 sub-galleries fill the museum as well. 

Bob Marley Museum

Perhaps the most famous figure to come out of Jamaica, Bob Marley still reigns as a cultural icon today. The famed Reggae musician met an early death in 1981 but the world still celebrates his music today, particularly in the form of the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston. The museum resides in what proved to be his final home and sits lined with rare memorabilia associated with the musical legend. Proof of Marley’s popularity lies with the fact that the museum remains the most visited sight in all of Kingston.

Institute of Jamaica


The Institute of Jamaica oversees the everyday operation of various museums throughout Jamaica, including the Museum of Natural History and Museums of History and Ethnography. The institute aims to preserve and celebrate Jamaica’s global influence, including the nation’s contributions to science, the arts and social causes. Overall the Institute of Jamaica boasts over 15,000 pieces, including a variety sculptures, bronze figures, masks and musical instruments, some dating back centuries.
