Getting Around

Las Terrenas is small enough that getting around on foot is a real option, especially along the shore with the firm sand. On the streets however one must keep in mind the problem with narrow sidewalks, random obstacles (dogs, children, machinery), plumes of acrid exhaust smoke, and muddy roads after rain. The exhaust issue is exceptional and the problem has only gotten worse as tourist oriented building has fueled a growth in Motoconcho traffic. These vehicles are simple scooters that one can flag down for a ride for three or four dollars to almost any part of Las Terrenas. A good portion of these machines run with two-stroke engines similar to many chainsaws and as such contribute almost all of the exhaust you can see and smell as well as the deafening buzz of their engines. After spending a few days in Las Terrenas enjoying the sun you begin to appreciate the few rainy days that bring Motoconchos traffic to a crawl.
Tourist taxis are comfortable and easy. They offer quick and reliable service and their drivers are certified and safe. A twenty four hour taxi booth is on the beach road between the center of the village and Playa Las Bellenas.
You can rent your own vehicle as well. A Motoconcho of your own, a Quad (two person, four wheeled), a motorcycle, or a car. Most rental places do better with cash than credit cards and the insurance is included though you are still responsible for any damage; read the contract!.
Driving your own vehicle is not difficult if you tend to be a safe driver to start with. Regular drivers of Northeast traffic in the USA and urban traffic in Europe or Latin America will find the transition much easier.
To travel outside of Las Terrenas you can get a taxi, or even a Motoconcho.
Also there are Gua-Guas, a free form service of private 'buses'. Gua-Guas range from small minivans to schoolbuses and even converted trucks. They have regular schedules and cover most of the country and are alot cheaper than taxis and more convenient than the regular bus lines.
