Sights in Boca chica

Edit This
Boca Chica is a quaint coastal area of the Dominican Republic and while there are not many Boca Chica Sights in the town itself, there are several right outside the area in the nearby city of Santo Domingo, just an hour’s drive away.

Beaches

One of the best Boca Chica sights to see is its beaches. In addition to the powdery, white sands, you'll find a beautiful lagoon of water on the main beach that's surrounded by a ring of natural coral reefs. This area of Boca Chica is perfect for families to swim and play in the water as they are shallow, yet deep enough to swim, snorkel, kayak or go out in a paddle boat. There also additional fun in Boca Chica besides just visiting the beautiful beaches. Wander around town and visit the many shops along the main beach, stop off and dine at some of the seafood restaurants or sidewalk cafes, play a round of golf at the San Andres Caribe Golf Club or try your luck at the Casino in the Hamaca Hotel.

Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón is a rebuilt 16th-century stone village located high on the top of a mountain. It was recreated by various artists and it's about a ninety-minute trip inland from Boca Chica. With its beautiful cobblestone streets, unique Spanish architecture, an amphitheater resembling those built in Greece and carved stone sculptures, it allows visitors to go back in time and experience what an ancient village may have been like.

Santo Domingo's Colonial City

Approximately an hour's drive away from Boca Chica is Santo Domingo's Colonial City. Inside this part of Santo Domingo, go on a walking tour and stroll the preserved cobblestone streets where Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake and Fernando Cortez once did. Or take a tour of the palaces, churches, forts, and museums, some built as early as the 1400's. Visit the House of Cord, the oldest original European building in the Americas--and also the house where Christopher Columbus' son Diego once lived. Another beautiful sight inside the Colonial City is the Cathedral of Santa Maria which was built in the 16th century and is the oldest cathedral still standing in the western hemisphere. It features elements of the Renaissance era and breathtaking Spanish architecture. In 1586, this cathedral was made famous by Sir Francis Drake when he took it over and used it as his base of operations while holding the city of Santo Domingo for ransom.
