For an island Tortola has a surprising amount of things to do. Here is a rundown on the main sites in the area, from historical buildings and museums to shopping destinations and beaches. You're sure to find something that peaks your interest.

Sugar Plantations

History buffs may be interested in touring a major part of Tortola's past: the sugar works. Mount Healthy Windmill National Park is a ruin from the 1700's, located in Mount Healthy. Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay is an original factory where you can taste the rum still made on location. Josiah's Bay Plantation also boasts a restaurant, art gallery and gift shop in the lovely local of Josiah's Bay. Another option with a bit of a twist is Thornton Plantation, which, apart from the ruins, is also where William Thornton originally drafted his plans for the new Capital Building in the USA.

Fortresses

If you're more interested in the military aspect of history, Tortola also has a number of forts and prisons. The Dungeon is located between Road Town and West End, and was once responsible for the protection of the islands. Her Majesty's Prison is the oldest building actually located in Road Town, while Fort Recovery is the oldest historical landmark on the entire island. There is now a restaurant and hotel on the location, though the fort itself is still intact. Fort Burt also boasts a hotel and a restaurant that's open for breakfast and dinner, not to mention a fabulous view of the harbor.

Religious Sites

There are also several churches that may be worth a visit to those who want to connect with their spiritual side. Road Town Methodist Church was rebuilt in 1926 and offers a lovely location for weekly services. St. Phillip's Anglican Church has the distinction of being the first church for liberated African-Americans after the US Civil War. Both are located in Road Town. On a similar vein, Zion Hill Chapel was the place of celebration on the Day of Emancipation in 1834. The church was rebuilt at the foot of Zion Hill rather than the crest. The Sunday Morning Well was also built to memorialize the area for the emancipation proclamation.

Nautical Sites

For marine buffs, The North Shore Shell Museum in Carrot Bay may be the place to go. You can also see the Vigilant, one of the original Tortola sloops from the eighteenth century. In Paraquita Bay you can stop in at the Virgin Islands Maritime Museum for an education program or just to peruse the artifacts.

Beaches

Beach bums will of course be overjoyed with Tortola. Be sure to make time to visit the most beautiful beach, Cane Garden Bay, as well as the long, pristine strip of white sand that is Long Bay. For those with a bit more adventure in them, make a day of it searching out Smuggler's Cove where the tranquil beaches make a perfect spot for private relaxation.

Road Town Main

Finally, be sure to head down Road Town's Main Street. You'll find all of the best restaurants and shops, as well as historical buildings such as the first Post Office and the Virgin Islands Folk Museum. You'll also want to take a quick peek into The Gallery, a shop that sells local paintings and prints, and Bamboushay Pottery to pick up some souvenirs before you head home.
