In the Beautifull Democratric Republic of Nicaragua there are not very well posted signs to the destinations in the country, but rather , very famous landmarks which make it some what easy to get around, and of course the good old stop and ask the frendly locals.

Easy to get lost driving in Nicaragua? NOT AT ALL. You are more likely to end up in one of the sight seen areas than away from your  final destination.  ( there is only a handfull of main roads that all lead to the major citys) so no worries.

Driving at night is  not recomended since like mentioned above, the road signs are not clearly posted and lighting on the cross country roads is poor or non existing, so unless you know the country very well, or somebody that know the roads very well is with you is best to drive during day time.

Safe in Nicaragua? of course, just use common sence as if you were traveling in any other country.

From Managua. Rent a car at the Airport in Managua. Start driving towards the city center in mananagua.( Centro ), First land mark is the liberation soldier. make a left onto that street and continue up until you see the big curve that leads toward the road (Carretera MASAYA / Lagoon SOSOSCA ). Take the Road to Masaya, continue driving for about 30 min  pass the VOLCANO MASAYA , next you arrive in MASAYA, continue driving and youll see the sign the leads you towards THE PUEBLOS BLANCOS ( CATARINA, SAN JUAN DE ORIENTE ) Once you get on that road, you should pass through the Coffe mountains towards the VOLCANO MONBACHO, where before you arrive there youll se numerous signs indicating the Canope tour agencys on the road.

Youll see the road that goes towards the VOLCANO MOMBACHO, Do not continue forward, make a right at that intersection. there are no sigsn that indicate the way to SAN JUAN DEL SUR, but that road takes you to the Panamerican road. once you intercept the PANAMERICAN ROAD, you should signs that tell you which way you should go. MAke a left onto that road heading south towards COSTA RICA .

Once on that road is a STRAIGHT SHOT ! . no worries . you are on you way.

The first land mark that tells you that you are close to SAN JUAN DEL SUR IS THE ISLA DE OMETEPE AND ZAPATERA the GREAT LAKE  with its two colosal VOLCANOS on it.

My advice. Dont stress it. dont go with pre concived notions and enjoy the scenery, people are  Super nice !  and will be more than happy to help you.
