Getting Around in San Juan del Sur
Edit ThisWhen deciding among the several choices for San Juan del Sur Transportation, it is important that you consider two factors: how much time you have available in San Juan del Sur and what is your budget.
Lots of Time and Small Budget
Under this scenario, the best option is to use the public buses, also known as "chicken buses" because they can get very very crowded like "chickens in a coop." Most buses in San Juan del Sur will resemble school buses from North American cities. The main bus station is right in front of the main market. Traveling by bus takes a long time but it will allow you to save lots of money. It is not recommended to wear flashy jewelry and watches, while riding the bus. Also avoid carrying large bags or suitcases, and carrying large amounts of money.
Short on Time and Medium Budget
If you don't have that much time available on your visit to Nicaragua, then it is a good idea to either use the express buses or rent a car.
The express buses are a noticeable upgrade from the chicken buses because they have air conditioning and individual seats. These buses travel much faster than the regular buses because they make fewer stops.
Renting a car in San Juan del Sur is best done at the Managua International Airport (IATA airport code: MGA), where you will be able to find several local (Targa and Lugo) and international car rental agencies (Alamo, Dollar and Hertz). It is a good idea to apply for an international driver's license before arriving to Nicaragua because it is the best proof of your driving ability around the country.
