The beautiful island of Roatan lies off of the Caribbean coast of Honduras, and is part of the department called las islas de la bahia, or The Bay Islands. It is a popular tourist destination, known for beautiful beaches, as well as incredible diving and snorkeling, part of the Meso-American barrier reef. The island itself is lush and hilly, and there are several different zip-line companies. Other activities on the island include horse-back riding, parasailing, sailing, playing with the monkeys at Gumbalimba Park, swimming with the dolphins at Anthony's Key, visiting the iguana farm and more. Though the island is known to be pricier than the mainland, there are several budget options for accommodations, including a hostel in Sandy Bay, Roatan Backpackers' Hostel, as well as hostels in West End. There are also inexpensive comedores for eating in Sandy Bay and Coxen Hole, and a few budget options in West End as well, such as Rotisserie Chicken, El Boske and Cannibal Cafe. If you don't yet know how to scuba dive and would like to learn, there are a multitude of dive shops around the island, including Ocean Connections, Reef Gliders and Coconut Tree Divers in West End and Octopus Divers in Sandy Bay.
