Shopping

In Guatemala you will find everything you may need or want, from a toothbrush to Daum crystal. Yet, it is unlikely that even such beautiful items as the latter might lure shoppers into our shops and boutiques. What they will most probably find irresistible are the wonders this country offers in terms of native arts and crafts, and the modern representation of the ancient Mayan traditions. Beautiful weavings, tapestries, wonderfully embroidered blouses (or güipiles), modern clothing inspired by the centuries-old traditional native costumes, magnificent workmanship in ceramic, wood, jade, silver, primitive and modern paintings, leather goods. Taking back a small sample of the creativity and craftsmanship of our Guatemalan people, who work with their hands to produce works of art, is an important part of the pleasure that visiting this country offers to tourists.

Heidi,
I have three wooden statues, religious in nature, brought back by my father which were found in an old dilapadated barn in Guatemala - they appear to be quite old, one of which is probably of the Virgin Mary, painted in a bright blue paint. Do you have any idea where I might be able to read more about htese statues. Two are just wooden, no paint, but crudely made. They are not to my eye, newly more..
