Festivals bring life and color to every country and they attract people to come to your place. No wonder, Antigua has a lot to offer everybody.
Antigua Guatemala Festivals are not just about partying and having fun. They also feature the unique culture and traditions of Antigua. Added to these are the different beauty spots and local attractions like the Merced Church, Plaza de Armas, Santa Clara and El Carmen. If you want to make the best out of your stay in Guatemala, better join and witness their Antigua Guatemala Festivals such as the following:
Semana Santa
This festival is the highlight in all of Guatemala. Every year tourists flock in the streets of Antigua just to witness this grand event. It is conducted during Easter or Holy Week when religious individuals come to Antigua and join the Easter parade. One of the things people look forward to is the display of paintings made from colored sawdust. This tradition started back in the 16th century, attracting art lovers and other painters around the world every year. During this time, other events like horse races and kite flying are also held to entertain visitors. Since it is during the Semana Santa that Antigua is packed with people, you better book your reservations ahead of time. It is also practical to arrive earlier to avoid traffic and book your accommodations ahead of time.
Santo Tomas Festival
The Quiche village comes alive every December, not only to celebrate Christmas but to honor their patron saint, Santo Tomas. Meanwhile, the Indians come together to exchange Cofradias and also to commemorate their own mythological gods. They also perform the Palo Volador where Indians fly, suspended in the air by the ropes, at the plaza. You can easily find great bargains in the marketplace which you can bring home to your family and friends.
Antigua Arts Festival
The Antigua Arts Festival is attended by art aficionados and performers from around the world. This celebration is hosted by Antigua twice a year. The festival showcases the talents of locals and those who have established their names in the field of performing arts. This is the best place to watch ballet dancers, opera and classical music singers perform their best.
