Samiapata Panorama

It may be Bolivia's largest city, but Santa Cruz itself is not particularly rich in tourist attractions and activities. A day or so is enough to get to know this modern, cosmopolitan city (by Bolivan standards). Most visitors here will soon be itching to get out and explore the many treasures of the surrounding area.

Samaipata - Rest in the Mountains

First stop on most visitors' agenda is Samaipata - a sleepy, pretty little mountain town which serves as a welcome retreat from the sub-tropical heat of the city. The town itself is worth the 100-kiiometer journey by mountain road, but what makes a trip out here particularly worthwhile are the beautiful surroundings. It's home to ancient ruins, little waterfalls and excellent walking, trekking and riding opportunities.

While it's possible to visit Samaipata as a day trip from Santa Cruz, most people will want to stop at least one night here. Happily, inexpensive guest houses can be found in abundance, and there is also a good dining scene and even a scattering of late night bars.

Quiet during the week, Samaipata throngs with people at the weekends, when scores of hardworking Santa Cruz residents head for this picturesque town.  (Fittingly, the name roughly translates as 'rest in the mountains'.)

It would be a shame to visit Samaipata and not see the nearby pre-Inca ruins at El Fuerte. Sitting nine kilometers from the town, El Fuerte is within walking distance, but visitors should be wary of the harsh midday heat and the fact that much of the distance involves steep ascent up rough tracks. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. For less active types, taxis will take you there and back for around $5 USD.

It's possible to reach Samaipata from Santa Cruz by bus (Sucre-bound) from the main bus station or by kombi van; but, for groups, it's quicker, more comfortable and more convenient to take a private cab. For four people travelling together, the cost, around $18 USD, will be much the same as for a coach.

La Higueira and the 'Che Guevara Trail'

For many people visiting the Santa Cruz area, making the pilgrimage to the spot where Che Guevara was killed is a real must-do. La Higueira, around 115 kilometers south of the Santa Cruz to Cochabamba road, is the spot, and here Che-devotees can see a museum as well as following in the iconic communist's last footsteps. Each October 8, thousands gather here to mark the anniversary of Che's death.

Buses leave from Santa Cruz's main coach station via Samaipata, and cost around $4-5 USD. Booking in advance is a wise move.
