Background Information

The Bermuda Islands consist of 138 islands. Bermuda was settled most recently by the British and is considered an overseas territory. In foreign affairs, it is represented by the United Kingdom. It was officially discovered in 1503 by Juan de Bermudez, hence the name Bermuda.  It is divided into nine parishes and two municipalities and has a population of about 65,000 people.  The largest island, or main island, is often called Bermuda. The city of Hamilton is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, with 15,000 people.  This city was named after Henry Hamilton, the governor from 1788 to 1794. May 24 is considered Bermuda Day, offering a celebration to this country's culture and history.

Style of Living

The currency, the Bermudan dollar, is interchanged with the United States dollar, excluding a small fee when exchanging the two.  Surprisingly, the GDP of Bermuda is the highest per capita in the world. This does not stop the tourists from traveling to Bermuda, however. Many are quick to travel there and look forward to the turquoise waters and pink sandy beaches.

Activities

Some enjoy learning about Bermuda's culture by visiting the various museums and forts. One of the most popular attractions is the Royal Naval Dockyard. The Railway Trail is popular with both the tourists and the local inhabitants as another enjoyable way to spend a day or afternoon on a walking or bike tour exploring the country. You will find eight golf courses in the 22 square miles in Bermuda.  

South Shore offers the most beaches, including the most popular and photographed, Warwick Park and Horseshoe Bay.  Although there are usually lifeguards on duty, be aware of the undercurrents.  You should be able to locate snorkeling and diving spots on the reef area, also.  If you're interested, wreck diving in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean has become a popular activity.
