Five Blues Lake

Edit This
Not far east along the Hummingbird Hwy are several natural gems. Five Blues Lake stands out as both a natural beauty and a testament to the hard work of the local villagers in St. Margaret's who manage and promote the park. It is quite a hike from the road, and without explicit directions it is easy to take a wrong turn and walk several miles out of the way on very remote and rough two-track trails that cross alternately through orange orchards and jungle. The lake is not particularly large, nor is it accessable at many points other than the canoe put-in. Canoes may be present, paddles may not. A small trail traverses the steep slopes around one side of the lake to a 5m platform of rock and concrete that offers jumping entertainment and a nice vantage point for soaking in the five shades of blue water from which the lake received it's name. Continuing down the trail to a large karst outcropping gives one the chance to imagine just what Fraggle Rock village must have been like, or perhaps the old hag's hideout in The Dark Crystal. Whatever it reminds you of it is an inspiring spot and it was apparently that to the Mayan inhabitants as well. Some of the caves and overhangs still contain intact pottery. If you do decide to venture into the caves/tunnels beware the bats, they are plentiful. If you are looking for a light hike and controlled scenery then Five Blues is not for you, however if you enjoy a strenuous hike and a cool dip in and wonderfully remote lake then maybe you should check it out.
