Shopping in Bahamas
Edit ThisWhen vacationing in the Bahamas, most visitors want to browse the shops looking for a souvenir to bring home with them, or perhaps an authentic piece of Bahamian art. Bahamas Shopping markets offer something for everyone; whether it is a high-end ticket item from a stylish shop or art gallery or a homemade crafted item from a local gift shop. Regardless of where you go in the Bahamas, shops and boutiques are all around, so stop in and take a look. You might find something you simply cannot live without.
Tradition
For years, Native Bahamians have continued the ancient traditions of the Taino and Lucayan Indians by creating one of kind arts and crafts. Bahamians showcase these pieces in booths and shops all throughout the islands. It's wonderful to see people still producing items in the fashion their ancestors did before them, and Bahamians use all natural and local resources to create crafts, arts, foods, spices and music. Some of the unique crafts you'll find when shopping in the Bahamas are blown glass items, paintings, driftwood paintings, clothing, ceramics, straw artwork, conch shell jewelry, pine seed dolls and more.
Duty-Free
The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas removed import duty costs on various items as of January 1, 1992. Therefore, you receive a significant savings when purchasing items like jewelry, crystal, leather goods, watches, clocks, china, telescopes, perfumes, fine linens, tablecloths, photography equipment, binoculars, and more. Duty-Free shops will feature their logo of DFS, so be sure to look for this logo and claim your lucrative savings when shopping.
New Providence
If you're looking to shop for higher-end, name brand items, you'll want to take a trip to Nassau on New Providence Island. Bay Street in the heart of Nassau features a huge shopping center as well as the "well-knowns" like Fendi, Gucci, and more. This area has been called a shopper's paradise, and between the chic shops and restaurants, it's no wonder.
Grand Bahamas Island
Travel to Grand Bahamas Island and attend the International Bazaar Freeport Bahamas. If you hadn't guessed, this international exchange bazaar is located in downtown Freeport, and buses throughout the area travel to and from this location multiple times per day. You'll be overwhelmed by the number of shops, vendor booths, restaurants, and cafes located here. There are approximately 25 or more countries represented at this bazaar on a daily basis, so it won't be hard to find both a wide mix of cultures in the patrons as well as the items being sold.
