Things to Do in Freeport

Edit This

With water on all sides of Grand Bahama Island, many Freeport things to do involve the ocean or beach, including diving, fishing, and water sports. There is also plenty to do on land, including hiking, observing wildlife, and soaking in the local culture.

Watersports

The pristine waters around the Bahamas are regarded by many as some of the best snorkeling, diving and fishing destinations in the world. The coral and reef formations off the coastline give snorkelers an opportunity to see schools of tropical fish and other sea life in the relatively shallow water. Scuba divers can go deeper to explore the underwater tunnels and caves. The reef system also helps to break up waves, allowing for calm waters along the coastline, perfect for water sports. Several beaches like Lucayan Beach, William's Town Beach and Xanadu Beach offer a variety of water sports and activities including snorkeling, parasailing, and banana boat and jet ski rentals.\

Fishing

Charters and boat rentals are available at most marinas for visitors looking to do some fishing. Independent fishing guides are also available on the island. Popular catches in the Bahamian waters include yellowtail, grouper and snapper around the reefs, and tuna, sailfish and marlin in the deeper waters. Also, the bonefish, considered to be one of the world's best game fish, is more abundant in Bahamian waters than anywhere else in the world.

Golfing

There are several golf courses on Grand Bahama Island, with the Lucayan Golf Course and the Reef Golf Course located in Freeport. The generous fairways and well-bunkered greens of the Lucayan Golf Course are constantly receiving upgrades to ensure the highest standards of golf. The unique links-style Reef Golf Course features lakes on 13 holes and wide-winding fairways.

Hiking

Nature enthusiasts can wander the trails at the Rand Nature Center, which just minutes from downtown Freeport. The Rand Nature Center is home to a variety of birds as well as 130 species of Bahamian plants. Lucayan National Park, located about 25 miles east of Freeport, is home to one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world. Visitors to the park can view the caves from footpaths while certified divers can explore them beneath the surface. Other activities in the park include kayaking, hiking through the forests and observing wildlife.
