Sights in Freeport

Edit This

Freeport, Bahamas may be best known for its 60 miles of powdery white sand beaches, but there are plenty of other Freeport sights to enjoy in and around the city. Other sights include cultural, historic and natural wonders, with activities for guests of all ages.

The Rand Nature Center

One of the biggest attractions at the 100-acre Rand Nature Center is the variety of birds that can be observed here. Species include the endangered Bahama parrots, Antillean peewee birds and stripe-headed tanagers. From the park's nature trail, at least 130 varieties of native plants can be seen, many of which were used by the early Grand Bahamians on a daily basis. Examples include the Uniola, a springy grass used to stuff mattresses, and the Agave, which has sharp pointy leaves that were used as needles. The Rand Nature Center also houses educational exhibits that focus on island ecology and the cultural and natural history of Grand Bahama Island.

The Rand Nature Center is located just minutes from downtown Freeport. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children five to 12 years old. Children under five get in for free.

Lucayan National Park

The 40-acre Lucayan National Park is best known for its underwater cave system—one of the longest in the world. The tunnel system is accessible by both land and sea, so visitors to the park can view the stalagmite-filled caves from footpaths, and certified divers can explore the caverns beneath the surface. The park also encompasses all six of the distinct ecosystems present in the Bahamian islands, as well as various types of wildlife which are visible by kayaking or hiking through the park's forests. Lucayan National Park is located about 25 miles east of Freeport.

Coral Reef

The 65-foot coral reef formation off Freeport's coast is full of tropical fish, sharks and other sea life, making the Bahamas a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The water is clear and relatively shallow, providing excellent visibility. Scuba divers, who can swim a little farther down, can also explore the underwater tunnels and caves. Among the residents of the coral reef are prized game fish like yellowtail, grouper and snapper, making this area equally popular with sport fishermen. Charters and boat rentals can be found at most marinas for visitors looking to go snorkeling, diving or fishing.
