Festivals in Freeport

Edit This

A fun-filled beach any day of the year, Freeport festivals really get this beach community up and going. Aside from the daily occurrences along Lucaya and other popular hot spots, there are two major festivals that occur annually, and a weekly fish fry year-round.

The Summer Junkanoo Festival

Held every July at Taino Beach, the festival features live music and performers. This festival features brightly masked performers and pulsing tribal music. The festival was officially added to the list of recurring Freeport events in 1970. Prior to that, it was celebrated as part of Boxing Day or New Year's Day. It is believed this celebration was started many years ago when a plantation owner gave his slaves the day off to celebrate. Although the celebration runs for a month, performances are only held on Thursdays.

Pirates of Grand Bahama Dive Week

This event, held during the third week of October, features a full week of dives in various places around the island. There is even a full-out treasure hunt. Diving here is considered to be superb, with crystal clear water and a shallow reef system. Discounted hotel rates are generally offered during this week as well.

Fish Fry at Smith Point

This event features the catch of the day at Smith Point, located to the east of the Harbour and Lucaya. The fish fry is held every Wednesday night year-round. Local residents and performers make this a special event for all.
