Portobello Aquarium

Edit This
Also know as the Portobello Marine Laboratory or NZ Marine Studies Centre and Westpac Aquarium. This facility is owned and operated by the Otago University. The Aquarium is open to the public and is well worth a visit. The aquarium includes a 'hands on' section where you can touch several types of sea creatures from seastars to camouflage crabs. Many types of fish and other creatures are on display - eg octopus, seahorses, sharks, blue cod. The main feedings are twice per week and well worth seeing if you're visiting on those days - check with the centre to find out the current feeding days.

The aquarium is located on the Otago Peninsula approximately 23 kms from the centre of town. Upon entering the Portobello village from town turn left at the shop and continue along Hatchery Road, an unsealed road, for 1.8 kms.
