Lower Hutt is just 15 minutes drive northeast from Wellington. It lies on the banks of the Hutt river and the hills and plain of the lower Hutt valley. There are swimming beaches in the seaside suburbs of Petone and Eastborne.
There are a number of walking tracks by the Hutt River and in the bush clad hills around Lower Hutt.
The suburb of Petone is where the first settlers from Britan landed in the 1840's and there is a museum dedicated to their arrival on the foreshore.
The main shopping area in Lower Hutt has a large (by New Zealand Standards) mall - Queensgate - with a number of fashion and speciality shops plus a range of cafes and a foodcourt.
The closest suburban railway station to the main shopping area in Lower Hutt is the Melling Station. This line is serviced by electric railcars that are over 60 years old.
